CCSS ELA: W.2.1

W.2.1 Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion, use linking words (e.g., because, and, also) to connect opinion and reasons, and provide a concluding statement or section.

This writing lesson covers how to write an opinion piece. The lesson includes research-based strategies and strategic questions that prepare students for assessments. In this lesson, students will write at least one complete sentence for each section of the planning chart that they developed in the Plan an Opinion Piece lesson. Then, they will use an Editing Checklist to identify and correct any errors. In addition to the lesson, there are three pages of additional topics for review.
