Determine the Central Message of a Story

This reading literature lesson covers how to determine the central message in a narrative or literary text. The lesson includes research-based strategies and strategic questions that prepare students for assessments. In this lesson, students will read the text, identify a character, and then identify a clue word that shows the character learned a lesson about life. What the character learns is then identified as the central message.

In this lesson, students compare and contrast what is the same and different between the plot in two stories. In addition to the lesson, there are four pages of Independent Practice and review with questions modeled after current adaptive testing items.
